Springing Into Action

2008

We have also hosted and attended various community service initiatives. starting in February and ending in June.

On Sunday, February 24th
we hosted a community service event in which we invited the LI Region Chapters, their candidates and interests, the Gamma Gamma Graduate Chapter, and members of Phi Iota Alpha, Inc  to a Non-for-profit dance studio in Ronkonkoma , LI named Ballet Long Island, where Yari DeLeón's (H. Espirituósa) daughter attends.  This dance studio is owned and operated by a woman who serves the community by standing by her mission to make dance affordable for everyone. This dance center also offer a wide array of job internships as well as 150 scholarships to children ranging from 7 years old and older who cannot afford to attain their dream of becoming a dancer. We painted all the studio rooms, the main lobby and our hermana Johanna Andino (H. Acacia) from our Beta Chapter painted a ballet slipper mural on their windows.  Yari 's company Kidz Connection donated the paint and tprovided lunch for all of the volunteers.

The dance studio Director Debra Punzi stated “The dance studio looks awesome and the students where so excited when they came in from their winter break to see the studio all painted and loved the mural. Thank you for your dedication to the studio and we will be eternally grateful for all that your sisters and their friends gave to the dance center."

On March 7, 2008 when our Founder Norma Porras-Reyes, Yari DeLeón, our Honorary Member Lynda Perdomo-Ayala and the Beta Chapter participated for the 6th year in a row in the La Vision Conference-"Si Se Puede/Yes We Can".  We were involved as Workshop Facilitators and Campus Tour Guides for Junior and Seniors of all Long Island High Schools at Stony Brook University ; this was hosted by the National Association of Puerto Rican and Hispanic Social Workers. “I look forward every year to this conference. I love being the facilitator of the "Quien Soy Yo/Who am I" workshop with Norma. It’s wonderful to have 60+ students attend your workshop and leave with the feeling that "Si Se Puede/Yes I can” go to college and be proud of who I am and my culture and not have to compromise it for my future - I LOVE IT!" says, Yari DeLeón
